From Hospitality Worker to Data Analyst Without a Degree 3.0
“Great works are performed not by strength but by perseverance”
- Samuel Johnson
It’s been two years since I embarked on my journey as a data analyst, transitioning from a background in hospitality. I initially thought it impossible to be a data analyst. (Relevant article). Here I am still in a Data Analyst role after 2 years.
As I reflect on this milestone, one of my key resolutions for this year is to engage more with networking events. Whether they’re personal or professional gatherings, the inevitable icebreaker question often revolves around occupation. I’ve grown accustomed to candidly admitting that I lack a formal computer science degree. Initially, I perceived this as a weakness, but over time, I’ve come to realise it’s quite the contrary. Many find it intriguing that I entered this field without prior qualifications. Yet, I’d be remiss not to acknowledge the imposter syndrome that crept in after securing my role, surrounded by colleagues boasting degrees in computer science or IT.
However, despite these initial doubts, my passion for being a data analyst has only deepened over the past two years. There’s a profound sense of achievement that comes with providing valuable insights to my team.
